Clarissa Busch
Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Illinois Institute of Technology

About me

I am an Assistant Professor of Philosophy in the Department of Humanities at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. I completed my PhD in Philosophy and an MA in Statistics and Data Science at the University of Pennsylvania in 2024. In my research, I bring a philosophy of social science lens to the climate change problem, as well as to ethical challenges related to AI technologies. I analyze climate change as a social phenomenon, adding an important, neglected dimension to a literature that has focused on the scientific and ethical aspects of climate change. I apply a diverse philosophical toolkit, including computational and statistical methods, to improve our understanding of the barriers to effective climate action. This toolkit supports my broader research program, including, for example, projects on the philosophy of sustainability science and the moral psychology of climate action.
‍
I’m originally from Germany, where I studied Philosophy & Economics at the University of Bayreuth and violin making and repair at the Mittenwald Musical Instrument Making School in the Bavarian Alps.
